Switch speeds

Neither.

The NIC and Switch will, in most cases, auto negotiate their mutual speed and duplex mode. So, your GB card will probably just run at

100Mbps.

If you for some reason have turned off auto negotiation on your NIC, and set it to 1000Mbps, then you will not get a connection to the switch.

If I connect a gigabit NIC to a switch via a port rated at only 100 Mbps, will the switch be wrecked or will it just freeze.

Many thanks.

You won't find any gigabit NICs that is not autosensing. It will set the speed to 100 if 100 is what it gets in the other end of the cable.

Now, why on earth did you post this question in a _firewall_ group when you could have just asked any IT sales person, techie or 16yo kid and got the answer right there? No, you don't really have to answer that one :)

Np.

No! Attaching a gigbit NIC to a 100 Mb switch will suck all the data out of the Internet! Don't do it!

To late! OOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo...........
