SP2 Shouldn't allow a PC AnyWhere conenction should it ?

Recently rebuilt a family members PC for them and I always install PC Anywhere host on it so if they have any problems I can access it and fix it from home. I also loaded XP SP2 on it. Family member called me Yesterday and needed some help so I "dialed in" via PC Anywhere and fixed the issues, only after disconnecting did it occur to me that SP2's firewall should of prevented the connection should it not ?

Thanks In Advance

I am certain that they did not answer the popup allowing the app' to communicate through the firewall. Also, the firewall IS still enabled.

Yes checked that and the port that PC Anywhere uses to connect is not on the allowed or open ports for the SP2 firewall!

Hmmm interesting Dan. I will do some digging around also and report back if I find anything significant.

The first time an application loads that listens on a port, if the SP2 firewall is running it pops up a box asking if the port should be opened for that app. Are you sure your family member didn't click yes to that question? If they did, then that explains why it's open. Or did they disable the firewall on boot up after SP2 when it gives you the option of disabling it?

Have you checked the allowed ports list in the firewall settings?

I know the SP2 firewall popped up boxes for all the listening apps I had running when I installed it, but I don't use PC Anywhere so I have no idea if that has some additional coding to allow it to automate the port setting.

In that case, the only other thing I can think of is that PC Anywhere uses uPnP to tell the SP2 firewall which ports to open on the fly. I've been digging around trying to find info, but all of the posts on PC Anywhere and XP SP2 I've come across so far are from people asking how to get it working as SP2 is blocking it.

By "dialed in" did you connect modem to modem directly, or IP to IP?

As an experiment I took a brand new PC straight out of the box, formatted it and reinstalled the O.S. from the Product Recovery CD. Installed SP2, and then installed a PC ANYWHERE host and then connected to the Internet via a Cable Modem. I was able to access the Host straight away from my PC without any problems even though SP2's firewall was active and I opened no ports to allow access. Interesting ?!

Thanks In Advance
