Blocking URLS & Domains

Hi just got my wirwless router set up and secure. I now need to set up the firewall properly. I have a rather "resourceful" teenager accessing the internet, any suggestions on which URL's, domains and ports I should block to stop any unsavory or illegal activities?

thanks

Rick

Some resourceful teenagers should be used as consultants rather than treated as 'adversaries' with access to the computer.

Hi,

Many of the current router will log a list of URLs visited. If yours can do this you already have access to his favourite places. It often isn't necessary to actually block, but simply let the teen know their activity is logged to protect the innocent. (little brother or sister maybe walking in on them)

If not, the list of unsavoury sites is far to long to put in by hand and I would suggest a commercial product like Net-Nanny or the like.

Since you didn't tell us what "Firewall" you are using, it's hard to tell you want/how to block.

If you had a firewall, at least a quality one, you could just select from categories of content type you want to block. Such as Porn.

Its not a software firewall, It's the firewall/filter built into my router - it doesnt have any catagories, just options for domains, urls etc, so any specific suggestions would be gratefully received

Hmmm, no disrespect Rick but a resourceful teen is already binary lightyears ahead of the best of our generation...Perhaps you should ask him how he could help you curtail a fellow worker and ego may prevail. Then apply it in triplicate to your system along with a hidden ethernet switch. Then again he has the library. now ask about hotwiring a chevy or staying out too late and I am up to speed. And, again, you don't have a firewall, you have a NAT Router, and you've still not told us what brand/model, so it's impossible to really help you.

As for your delima, there is nothing you can do, as the kid will always find a way around anything you can do with your NAT router.
