Switches can be considered as mutliport bridges.

Once upon a time, there were many protocols in use, which could not be routed. Fortunately those protocols have either disappeared or been modified to run over IP. A non-routable protocol is about the only valid reason for doing what you want and they are pretty much history. The world is moving to IP, so routing will be the norm.
