Subnet Mask performance issues?

Hello,

This might be a dumb question, but I wanted to know if a subnet mask could decrease network performance, we have a main locations with 5 remote locations, at all locations the network was setup with

255.255.0.0 network. At the remote locations there are between 10-20 devices at each location and at the main office there are about 50 devices. The remote connections are connected trough point to point T1 1.5 lines, lately we've seen some network performanace issues, where things just run slow and wanted to know if the subnet mask could be one of the reasons. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, Igor Pinchevskiy

Hi,

Definitively not. If you have the same number of hosts in a network, and you use either a /24 prefix or a /8 prefix, performance has to be the same. Try to see if you have your DS1 congested, for example. ( this of course is not the only cause of a network "slow" performance )...

Well, the subnet mask PER SE would not cause a performance issue, but a routing loop caused by mismatched masks, incorrect routing statements, or inappropriate routing protocols would.

Are the links numbered or unnumbered?

Looking at the netflow or ip accounting statistics could shed some light on what the deal is with the traffic, presuming your platform supports it.
