link type is force-up

Hi,

On a Catalyst 4500 with SX-GBICs what does "link type is force-up" mean (show interface gi1/2, sx-gbic)? We're having troubles bringing up a link between a Cat4500 and Cat2950-sx24. Link light on 2950 doesn't light up. Link light on 4500-side does light up. We already exchanged ports / gbics / ... .

Cisco.com doesn't have an explanation of the "force-up" state (or I can't find it).

I have had a look too and can't find anything much.

Hi,

The config on both switches is actually quite easy:

interface GigabitEthernetX/Y switchport mode access !

In order to rule out any mis-configuration we stripped the config to the bare minimum. My first goal is to see an up/up state on both sides of the link. Cat4500 says in show interface output "link type is force-up" and administrative- and operational status "up". Cat2950 says in show interface output operational status "down". Interface is not in shutdown state.

I do not have physical access to the switches right now so I can't give you more details.
