<Hopefully> Simple Catalyst 2950 Questions... open original image

Greetings, It's been a few years since I've configured cisco switches, so I'm confused by a few newer concepts.

Scenario: I've got (2) 2950 48-port Catalyst switches, each with stacking GBIC and one stacking cable connecting them.

  1. I was trying out the "Network Assistant" tool (I know..should just use cli) and allowed it to define the GBIC port as a SMARTSLOT and added it to VLAN1.

Question: Should I just leave that GBIC port alone and not use the SMARTSLOT feature?

  1. Is it worthwhile putting these in a cluster or is it flakey?

  1. From the cli, 'copy run start' didn't work. Is there some new command to copy/save the config?

Thanks for any assistance, CB

If you want to do it from the command line just make sure that all switches in the gigastack are at the supported IOS revision.

int gi0/1 switchport trunk encapsulation xxx (isl or 802.1q) switchport mode xxx (dynamic desirable. auto. trunk..)

You can do that hard code the trunks or enable negotiation. IIRC they take about

30 seconds for the Gigastack to come up.

You should take a look at the gigastack docs here,
