Hi,

I've recently heard of a method of attacking Cisco routers based on the idea that they will sacrifice admin security in favour of continuing to correctly route when they are bombarded with packets.

I have tried to recreate the problem on a Cisco 2600 series router in a test environment but cannot. (This is a good thing!).

Two questions:

  1. Was this 'exploit' ever real or just an urban security legend?
  2. If it did exist how did Cisco fix the problem?

Thanks,

Hi Martin,

That sounds like a complete urban myth to me, I have never heard of such a thing. If it ever was an issue you can bet Cisco would have had that one stopped years ago.

Cheers....................pk.
