subnetting a subnet

Is further subnetting of an already subnetted address covered on

640-801? We read about it in my CCNA 3 class, but I haven't seen it on any practice exams so far.

You should ask to practice that beacuse you will need it if you want to pass certification

Yes, you may need it for CCNA, but you will definitely need it for CCDA or anything with an P at the end of it. Its not really that difficult. Just remember that adding one to the subnet mask splits your network in half. Start with the largest subnet (least "1"s in the mask) first, then work your way down.

A trivial example:

192.168.1.0/24 (254 hosts) = 192.168.1.0/25 + 192.168.1.128/25 (126 + 126 hosts) = 192.168.1.0/25 + 192.168.1.128/26 + 192.168.1.192/26 (126 + 62 + 62 hosts) = 192.168.1.0/25 + 192.168.1.128/26 + 192.168.1.192/28 + 192.168.1.208/28
  • 192.168.1.224/28 + 192.168.1.240/28 (126 + 62 + 14 + 14 + 14 + 14 hosts) =
192.168.1.0/25 + 192.168.1.128/26 + 192.168.1.192/28 + 192.168.1.208/28
  • 192.168.1.224/28 + 192.168.1.240/29 + 192.168.1.248/30 +
192.168.1.252/30 (126 + 62 + 14 +14 + 14 + 6 + 2 + 2 hosts)
