Lets say if I am configuring point to point subinterface on serial 0/0
Can i give any random number to subinterface and make it same as the DLCI (for easiness sake) like:
RTR1(config)#int s0/0 RTR1(config-if)#int s0/0.286 //(where DLCI is also 286)

Yes - this is considered good practice to use meaningfull number. You have almost ten digits to play with.
