Maximum Hops

Can someone please clarify a few things for me for me please??

Protocol Max hop count Considered unreachable RIPV1&2 15 16 IGRP 254 255 (defaults to 100) EIGRP 254 255 OSPF Unlimited N/A (OSPF doesn't use hop counts)

Is this correct? I've read conflicting info. In particular, that the max hop count for EIGRP is 224 and that the max hop count for IGRP is

255. I've even read that OSPF has a hop count limit of 200! (what the?)

Thanks,

RB

On distance vector routing protocols use hop count. For RIP, max is 15 (16 is infinity); for IGRP, the default is 100 but it can be set as high as 255 with "metric maximum-hop 255". Also, because the TTL field in the IP header is only 1-byte long (8 bits), you can think of 255 as max hop count for all routing protocols.

Thanks for that.

Hate to add to the confusion, but I have EIGRP as 254

and IGRP as 224 -->

And finally, for BGP 255

ISIS, we'll say is equivalent to OSPF, so no maximum hop count.
