Can you use a mask lower than /24 for a Class C address and lower than /16 for a Class B address while subnetting?

Also, if the mask has to be consecutive 1s and 0s why can you not have

128.0.0.0, 192.0.0.0, 224.0.0.0, 240.0.0.0, 248.0.0.0, 252.0.0.0 or
254.0.0.0?

Hi Mark,

You are describing supernetting. A /23 mask on a class c will combine 2 class c networks in to 1 with twice as many hosts.

The interesting here about "classes" is that address Class should not have to do anything with network mask.
