any firmware for linksys WRT54G with lots of port forwards?

This little router is known for having a great amount of power and flexibility. It's a small Linux box, is all.

Do a google search on "wrt54g alternate firmware" and watch what you get.

I'm using the current release of the Linksys firmware for my WRT54G. I'm getting a little hacked off by being limited to specifying only 14 port forwards (or whatever the actual number is). Anyone know of alternative firmware for this device that allows lots of port forwards? Or is somehow limited by the actual hardware? (I doubt it)

thanks alex

Buy a real router! What do you expect from a $50-$75 unit.

Seriously, the processing power in these little units can barely handle serving up their management web pages let alone handle the other tasks that you are trying to squeeze out of it. You've got WAP, router and a small switch in one box for $50-$75. Go buy a router with a bit more capability (I hear that Netopia's Ethernet-Ethernet routers are fairly robust or a Cisco Ethernet-Ethernet router. Both run in the $200-$300 range.) and a WAP, or learn to accept the limitations of your Linksys.

I have been running my BEFSR11 version 1 for over 5 years ... no problems at all!!

Over the years - they have released some crappy firmware versions - but I am sitting on 1.46.02, Aug 03 2004 and everything works perfectly!!

I don't know the WRT54G but the BEFSR41 was a piece of junk.

The one that I owned is sitting here gathering dust from one such firmware update. Left the bugger completely brain-damaged. Linksys support wanted me to mail it to them for repair/replacement. Of course it was outside of its warranty period, so it would have cost me more than the piece of junk was worth. It was also at about the time that my T1 was installed, so I no longer needed it.

I have a WAP54G which has been working OK for me. I wouldn't be using it if it wasn't a freebee tho. I purchased a set of 7.5dB high-gain antenna for it and I get good coverage. I can walk the perimeter of my property with my Powerbook G4 and not lose internet connectivity. Why I'd want to be on the far side of my pool with my Powerbook is not necessary but it is possible. ;)

Well - you don't say why the BEFSR41 was a piece of junk (aside from the mystery firmware problem), and you don't say what is wrong with the WAP54G.

Duh! The version I had couldn't serve multiple connections from the web server; thus, its many webpage image links would appear as broken links unless I told the browser to connect with a single connection. Its firm- ware update procedure was (and probably still is) PC only. Of course, there's that bad update which even the Linksys techs couldn't work out. Junk.

Can't you read? Read the first sentence of the paragraph quoted in the snippet from my posting you provided.

Point #1 - Why duh? you never said what was wrong with it. If you were a little more articulate - than perhaps people would take you seriously.

Point #2 - Your first sentence said it was ok. The inference is that you needed greater coverage so you added better antennas. That's why people make and buy bigger antennas. Even though you stated that you can now walk around your property like an idiot holding your laptop in your hand - there is no need to and the basic antennas are probably fine for normal and sane usage.

Duh shit for brains incapable of English comprehension. I didn't say that I had any problem with the WAP54G! That's why I never said what was wrong with it. I don't believe there are any canons for this newsgroup requiring me to have some equipment problem to post.

The walk around the property was to assess the limitations of coverage. I reside in the flight path of McGuire AFB. When the C130s and other planes pass over head, everything from the cable TV and telephone to my wireless are affected.

With the original antenna, the Powerbook had a very low signal level out on the patio (adjacent to the back of the house). The new 7.5bBm antenna have raised that level to the point where the signal strength indication icon is full. No interference by the passing planes now.
