ADSL - Should I disconnect and reconnect?

Sep 11, 2004 1 Replies

Is there any advantage in occasionally disconnecting your ADSL link and reconnecting in order to "freshen" the connection?

I keep my connection on all the time for days or even weeks on end although I do reboot the computer every day. Might my connection speed be improved if I ocassionally disconnect and reconnect?

If you have a poor noise margin, you modem will negotiate down to find a more stable connection. It won't go the other way. If you can, query the modem from time to time (or run a speed test) to see if this is happening. If your connection speed degrades over time, restarting the modem might bump it back up.
