wireless printer and typeface

I am very grateful for your advise. Many thanks.

We have installed a wireless B/W laser printer which is very useful and works very well, I work at home and can print from wherever I am with my laptop. However, some of the work I do require the use of IPA (Internat.Phonetic Alphabet), and I was very disappointed when I found that the printout was showing some symbols unknown to me, rather than the intended phonetics symbols. I have never had problems with the older printer, an inkjet and, as I don't know much about this technology, I wander whether some of you could help me with this problem.

Many thanks in advance.
