WiMAX (Worldwide interoperability of Microwave access) is the next generation in WiFi technology. It uses 802.16E. It has a range up to 30 miles and 70MBPS. Currently, developments are moving towards a central station provided by broadband companies to cover an entire city. That means you can access the internet anywhere in the city, even outside of WiFi hotspots. You will not need a router or Cable/DSL modem, only an adapter on your computer and you can hook up to the provider's transmitter.
