Nevermind...the 7.1 is being discontinued and replaced the the

30 day trial 7.5, after which some functionality is crippled. [snip] This setup contains the free as well as the paid version of AVG Anti-Spyware. After the installation, a free 30-day trial version containing all the extensions of the full version will be activated. At the end of the trial, these extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version. The purchased license code can be entered at any time.

The free version works fine -- the limitations don't affect basic functionality.

Avast works well, but the set up is a bit confusing.

agreed - grisoft seem to have lots of network capacity - updates even for the free version by default once per day, and its rare for the auto update to fail.

i put the free version on laptops when i rebuild them for others, and use the paid version on a couple of my own PCs.

they do tend to hide the free version - and the licence says at most 1 copy per user (which seems to be the terms for most other free AV as well).

So - if you have multiple machines you should be paying for it.

easy way to tell which is which - the download file name for the current free version has "avg75free_"...

ClamAV used here on both Linux and Windows boxes.

You don't have to download the trial. There is a free version with no trial mode at all just the plain free version. It has a slightly different interface but otherwise appears identical to the previous version. Read

see there is a free version, a free version with a trial included and a paid for version. They do try and highlight the paid version more prominently but then they did for the previous versions as well. There now seems to be a free manual for the free version too.
