Why Verizon And China Could Be Battling Over 5G Mobile Standard [telecom]

Verizon Communications' (VZ) goal of leading the U.S. in rolling out 5G wireless services will pressure China as global standards are finalized, says a Jefferies report.

Verizon has focused early trials on "fixed" 5G - providing high-speed internet services to homes that would compete with the broadband services of cable firms such as Comcast (CMCSA). Verizon's fixed 5G services would use high-frequency spectrum. The first commercial deployments, possibly for apartment buildings, are expected in 2018.
