total calls/year? [telecom]

In the 1976 Bell publication introducing the #4ESS toll switch, the prediction of 40 billion interstate calls in the year 2000 was offered.

Do we have any idea what it really amounted to?

The FCC issued a bi-annual report, "Trends in Telephone Service", in May 2002 which lists total interstate toll calls at between 539 & 616 billion minutes and 10 minutes average per call for residential usage. I didn't see call volumes or total average minutes per call in there.

I noticed the last BOC electromechanical switch was cut over in either '96 or '97 in there. Anyone familiar with the location & type?
