Our county is doing a rather expensive public safety radio upgrade system that's supposed to tie into an upgrade NY state is doing.
Beyond the issue of competing with normal users in cell bands, public safety radios do some specialized tricks like having a button to put a bunch of firemen* something that acts like a party line or conference call.
