Want some free amusement? Change your voice mail answer message to say

"Hello", followed by two or three second of silence, and then put in th usual "please leave a message".

It fools the telemarketeers computer into thinking that a human has answered, because they're programmed to sense [sound] followed by [silence]. You'll get a lot of puzzled "Hello?" messages from eager pitchmen who thought they were being connected to a human, and also a lot of recordings-of-recordings, telling you of the advantages of product x, until your voice mail times out.

Wouldn't that be considered a PBX? Some equipment may be on site (e.g. the last time I ordered Centrex service it was delivered over a T1 with a channel-bank type device on the premises) but functionality was implemented in the CO switch.

My first guess would be that the system had multiple trunks with different CID behaviour and was performing some kind of route optimization, but I'm guessing that you would have mentioned if there was an obvious reason why your cell and home numbers would have been routed differently.

I have certainly encountered functional limitations when calls are routed from one carrier to another, usually described by the ILEC as 'a technical limitation' but described by the CLEC or LD carrier as something the ILEC do intentionally (or, at least, choose not to remedy) in order to limit functionality while not completely refusing interconnection. My favourite example is trying to find out why I can't get a 64K 'clean' ISDN connection from x to y from anyone but the ILEC (or their chosen LD carrier.)

No it is a full switch that runs on its own, once it knows it is a number not of its own, it then goes to a toll center or another switch just as a regular public switch would.

I guess it maybe the way at&t handles it, I'm waiting for a call from them, they have contacted the techs that handle switch to see if it is something local, but I don't think so as the problem would be in both calls, that is unless it is routed vial a different center, but both are in Riverside and all 3 switches are DMS, though one is wireless.

I tried to get a look at the local Centrex switch, but it is not manned and they only send someone out if it is a hardware problem, just have to wait until they get out there and then see if they will let me look at the management operating terminals.

It's like having a PBX, except the PBX is installed and maintained by telephone company employees, sometimes in a telephone company building on your campus. When something goes wrong, you can yell at the telephone company.

This switch is much more then that. A PBX would just act for local calls, then to reach the network, you dial out like an 8 or 9, This system is the same as a CO, you dial the number and it translates and goes through like you would do at home, you dial all 7 or 11 digits you do not have to dial an access code to get out of the local switch. I saw it today, and it it a DMS 100, and the CID problem has been fixed, it was a translation problem in the local switch, once the tech and I talked he know what the problem was as I did and we went over to the management terminal and he even let me fix the problem, 10 plus years of not working on that switch I still remembered all the codes including the master password, I guess you never forget, I know it is that way with the color code.

The ILEC crowd loves to drag their feet in order to make competitors look bad.

I remember when I ported my number from Verizon to Vonage. The twenty business days had come and gone and still no number transfer.

On the 21st day I contact the PUC and miraculously that afternoon Verizon released my number to Vonage.

I know that Verizon also plays games with trunking between themselves and CLECs.

I don't know how Verizon works in other parts of the country, but I worked for GTE in California for over 30 years and when we put SS7 trucking in that data was passed through the trunks; we allowed the other carriers to access all the CID data, I had a little experience with ILEC'a until I started doing contract work. Like I said after the tech and I talked he over he understood what the problem was and fixed it.

Right now I can't dial out or receive calls on my hme phone. If I call out I get 2 lines and it is real strange, at first i thought it was a crossed cable or maybe a ring ground, but my DSL is working fine, so I don't think it is a cable problem, it has to be in the CO switch since the DSL spits off on a DSLAM before it gets to the switch, I would guess it might be a bad or loose line card. at&t took the report before 7 am and repair is due by 8 pm, they are sending a tech out, I'll just let them go through their plan, I have a second line that used to run my BBS so I can still call out.
