DHS has detected possible cellphone surveillance in D.C. - and doesn't know who's doing it



The Department of Homeland Security revealed it has observed activity consistent with the use of "StingRay" devices.

Once the device has connected to a phone, does it also link to a "Real" cell tower and pass through whatever the phone does?

i.e. If one's phone has been acquired by a StingRay box, is it obvious to the user that something is wrong, or does it look like business as usual?
