Amazon Settles Patent Lawsuit for $40 Million

Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday said it will pay $40 million in the third quarter to settle a patent infringement lawsuit with Soverain Software LLC.

The settlement of the lawsuit, which was originally filed in 2004 in Texas, was announced in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Amazon, the online retailer, said the settlement also includes the dismissal of all claims and counterclaims, mutual releases, and a nonexclusive license to Soverain's patent portfolio.

Soverain had filed the suit against Amazon on January 12, 2004 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Amazon said in the filing.
