The metal ones are automatically grounded. The plastic ones require you to glue the grounding wire to them. ;-))

Thanks to everyone for their replies - The builder tells me that the eol resistor is housed in a unit which screws into the smoke alarm unit. We're going to take one out over the next couple of days so we can see if we can get one elsewhere.
