Is it possible (or recommended) to insert a 3-way adapter into the XTB so I can plug in a maxi-controller AND a TW523?

Yes, that should work fine. I measured about 4Vpp on the "shared bus" during transmit, and still over 200mV during receive. And the combined current is well below the maximum limit on the X10 receptacle.
