Thermostat status

In thinking about what I want to do with my new HA system, querying the thermostat as to it's current status, A/C system is running or not running, seemed like an obvious and trivial question. Also actions like "turn on/off timer-1" to obtain time intervals also seemed like a natural request. It appears the major players in this field don't agree. A "communicating thermostat" that can't even communicate it's current state certainly doesn't fit my definition of communication. Are there solutions for accomplishing these tasks?

Thanks Dennis

Dennis,

Check out the home automation stores (like

etc.etc.) and look in the HVAC sections. You'll find all the major players in the home automation HVAC equipment (and you can research further from there).

The only problem is you'll want to get one that is compatible with your system and there is suprisingly llimited support between the various manufacturers.

I use an Aprilaire 8870 thermostat with the 8811 RS232 adapter. Communicates all current status info. I don't use it to set timer info, as I use my HA software to control that stuff. I don't use the aprilaire timer.

From the RCS website: "The RCS communicating thermostats function as stand alone thermostat subsystems with communications to allow remote data acquisition and control of the units. All thermostat functions can be monitored or controlled via network commands."

I believe that answers the question in the affirmative. These stats can be controlled by HA systems and will report their status back to the system as well.

BTW, although I don't have all of them listed yet, I plan to add several brands of communicating thermostats to our website shortly. In the meantime, I'd be happy to offer a quote on any project.

A Communicating Thermostat, I've been working on an open source design for some time. I've posted the schematics (Cricket & Ladybug) on my site. The source code and PCB designs will be published as soon as available. It's alot of work, any feedback would be welcome.

It's got both RS232 & RS485 options, and a master / slave mode Cricket

  • Ladybug for large installs. Just added an LCD option to Cricket for use also as a message center. (I prefer the LED version though)
