wipfw rules configuration for a laptop

Firewall newbie / Linux novice here, who just downloaded wipfw as a free, lightweight Windows firewall.

I have looked through the Readme and examples; I am mostly a do-it-yourselfer, but in the absence of a walk through I'm a little uncertain how to proceed.

I understand the concept of firewalling a server, because the service ports are set...I don't want anyone hacking port 80, so I deny all incoming requests for that port.

But how does that apply to a workstation, which doesn't use the same port numbers as a server--or static port numbers--for TCP communications? For example, 'netstat' now shows that I am connected to Google on port 3133.

My goal is to firewall the laptop so I am safer when accessing the Internet from public wireless access points.

Thanks for any direction!
