Utility to check for ports the firewall blocks or passes through

Hi

I have two subnets with a firewall in between. The firewall is managed by a third party, but I need to independently check out if specific ports are opened or not.

I imagine it should be done with a pair of programs running on each subnet and trying to communicate through various ports.

Does someone know of such an utility?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Sebastian and John. I'll check Netcat first, seems simpler...

Just use a port scanner, i.e. nmap.
