Question about IOS performance

Nov 22, 2010 1 Replies

Hello I have a question that I am not able to answer :)

Considering the same machine , for example 2x C3745 with 128F/512D, latest

12.4T IOS on them.

One with 12.4 ADV ENTERPRISE and the other with 12.4 IPBASEK9

The first will have more ram occupied comparing with the second, OK.

Considering the same machine, the same config, the same operation, the same traffic, will an IOS impact on performances?

I mean, IPBASEK9 is faster than ADVENTERPRISE on the same machine, doing the same activities? (assuming that ram is sufficiently free for the operations)

Thank you

No. Both will be the same.

By the way, RAM is not a performance issue on IOS. Either you have enough and the router works or you don't and some process does not work. Depending on the process that fails to allocate memory the router may crash.

There is no fancy memory management or any virtual memory system.

For example it is possible to have too little memory to get a new VTY session going but the router does not immediately crash. It is quite likely that it will crash soon though:)

The new (to me) "Modular" stuff may well be different.
