Although no business relationship exists, you're picking out an irrelevant difference. The actual "support" is conducted in the same manner with the exception that there is no assurance that the "support personnel" have been properly trained.
That's a blanket generalization that's only applicable to a minority of cases. Certainly there are people whose mommies and daddies didn't teach to say thank you, but the OP was more than generous with his expressed gratitute.
That question needed to be asked? How many setups are there where there is no splitter at all? Not very many I would imagine. Assisting him in understanding that "Upstream Power 50.00 dBmV" was an indication of possible problems in his splitters & connections would have enabled him to understand better, but splitter failure wasn't mentioned as a possible cause of his problems so it didn't sound important until Warren's tantrum.
And the point is that the OP was obviously uncomfortable in dealing with cabling & splitters and prefers to let a professional "Larry" handle such things. If he was an expert and could do it himself, he wouldn't be looking for help.
No. He maintained his restraint until yet more abuse was posted. He has far more patience than most people I know of.
From what I've seen on this thread, that will be a plus.

Well, all I can say is that with the arrogant attitude of you and Warren, I'd rather have no help (paid or free) than to take your condescending attitude. I didn't see anything wrong with Oren's request. Maybe he didn't have all of the answers but that's why he was asking for help. Instead he gets a ration of crap from someone who seemed more interested in showing how much he knew rather than help anyone.

Dave
I didn't see where Oren demanded that anyone help him. And you all are free to pass on his request totally. It was Warren to chose to jump in and soon after spent several paragraphs lecturing him, accusing him of being dishonest and treating him like a child. I think he was totally out of line. And your defense of it is just as bad. The arrogance is unbelievable!

Hey Dave - quit beating a dead horse and let's all move on to something more productive.

Please cite where I dumped or even mention Warren's "attitude". I addressed him and his comments. He has not responded. He has relied on you to defend him though. He self-admittedly injected "bad mood" and even adds some political commentary, beside implying lying, laziness and dishonesty. Yes I responded to his "verbal diarrhea" and would do it again.
You've made this point twice now. No, no one has to change a nym to post here and I especially will not.

Well, I've about had all of these peoples arrogance I want. But I'm not sure who you are to tell people when to move on either.

Warren
Yeah, Bill. Who are you to express an opinion? If you don't agree with Dave, why aren't you moving on?
Okay, let's break this all down. My point was that if someone doesn't give accurate information, it's a waste of time to try to help. And you know what? That may not have been on a straight line to a resolution to the actual technical issue, but it did address the technical issue at hand. It may not have been touchy-feely enough for some people, but it was on-topic to the issue.
Whether or not it was touchy-feely enough, or whether I'm to arrogant is not on-topic.
Dave, who the hell are you to pass judgment on me? Are you the self-appointed king of this newsgroup now? If my answers don't live-up to your standards, is it now your job to call me arrogant? Is that not pretty darn arrogant of you to do so?
And Oren, I have explained myself far beyond the point of necessity. You said a splitter couldn't have anything to do with your problem because you didn't have any. Later, after being backed into a corner, you admitted that in fact there was a splitter. I suggested possible motivations as to why you did that. I really don't know why you did that. All I know is that when someone does that, regardless of their motivation, it changes the technical discussion from troubleshooting to a waste of time.
But you know what? The way some folks here, like Dave, want to continue to beat this dead horse, I can see what a killjoy I was. He doesn't want accurate information so productive troubleshooting of a technical problem can happen. He just wants to see his name in the From column. And how dare I suggest that inaccurate information is going to result in a waste of everyone's time. He apparently wants to waste time.
Well you know what, Dave? If you think it's okay to keep this thread going to continue to call me arrogant, which is off-topic, be aware that I will continue to post that it's a waste of time trying to resolve a technical issue when the poster can't/won't give accurate information -- especially when it's as simple as saying whether there is or is not a splitter.
And if that's poor customer service, Bob, then I guess you'll just have to dock my next paycheck for posting here, and write me up. Oh, wait! I'm not an employee, and I wasn't addressing a customer. (Of course it still would have been a waste of time to deal with a customer who isn't giving accurate information. The difference is that if there was a customer involved, it would have been not just a waste of time, but a waste of money as well.)
Arrogance? Hell yeah. There's a lot of that going around right now. And Bill, how dare you suggest we move on until all the arrogant folk are done beating the dead horse! Sheesh.
All this could have been avoided rather simply: Had Oren not denied that there was a splitter when the fact is that there was one, none of this would be an issue. It's just that simple.

What you are describing, and the way you describe it, did not take place. The record is sitting right there on the server. Review it before you once again state what amounts to your own "falsehood".
What became apparent starting early on is that the OP was not technically savvy in regards to cable modems and their connection to the ISP. So why do you expect him to be?
He was helpfully guided into opening his modem's webpage and that information contributed and led to the splitter discussion. He stated that there were no splitters in the house and I'm sure that he knows more about that than any of us do. Then he gave the following response to the question there. "
Then it becomes a Larry, the Cable Guy question. ISP made all changes when they installed service (it has been awhile). Some new cables for TV, maybe not the "DC" (learned that today, hehe). I kinda recall them putting new connectors on the cables at the house junction box.
Certainly a good point and will be inspected, perhaps bypassed with a direct cable to the modem from the exterior box (I'm still reading). "
Looks like he was planning to have that looked into and things were on the road to solution. That was all before you posted.
Dave was the single most helpful person. Read the record.
Just don't post then. Volunteering only means that a person isn't being paid, not that they are responsible for doing a good job. Most people enjoy helping others and get an inner satisfaction from that. There are plenty to take your place if you don't like it.
But that's a lie. It's just that simple.
