Remember that Telephone and cable lines can also conduct high voltage

-- for full protection, you should also guard against surges from your telephone or cable lines. Any lines carrying signals into your home can also carry a power surge, due to lightning or a number of other factors. If your computer is connected to the phone lines via a modem, you should get a surge protector that has a phone-line input jack. If you have a coaxial cable line hooked up to expensive equipment, consider a cable surge protector. Surges on these lines can do just as much damage as surges over power lines.

After that fine word from the Spammer.... Let me turn this into something useful.....

Being that they are talking about home applications, a trip to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, CC, or any of the other likely suspects will suffice. For your entertainment center or computer, get a surge suppressor that addresses everything coming from the wall. Basically, there should be one power plug, one coax, and maybe one telephone line. All should pass through the surge suppressor. That gives differences in potential between the services somewhere to flash over besides the guts of your electronics. You don't need a real fancy (read expensive) one, just one that all the services can pass though.

Now, those that have run the Network all over the house.... Things get more complicated....
