Managed Ethernet Field Switch Provides Support for Tarrifed Wireless and Fiber-to-Premises Applications

New, Highly-configurable Managed Switch from GarrettCom Offers Hardened, Small-footprint Package for Field Applications

GarrettCom? Inc.'s new Magnum? 6K8 Managed Switch provides a field-hardened compact device, roughly the size of a brick that can be deployed at the outer edges of telecom networks to support new tariffed communications services such as WiFi access and fiber-to-the-premises. The 6K8 Switch can accommodate up to eight 10/100 Mb copper and fiber ports, or four 100Mb plus a 1 Gb uplink port, and comes in a hardened metal package designed specifically for extreme temperatures and harsh environments in wireless towers, surveillance, and other out-of-doors applications. With sophisticated network management software including Secure Web Management, fiber media configurability, -48VDC power and support for fault tolerant networks, the Magnum 6K8, like the entire Magnum 6K line of managed Ethernet switches, addresses the needs of these evolving applications.

"Ethernet in telecommunications facilities is spreading beyond the central office infrastructure to revenue-producing parts of carrier networks," said Frank Madren, GarrettCom president. "We have been seeing increasing demand for new Ethernet applications, such as connecting new metro wireless service access points or augmenting traditional SONET fiber rings and T1 lines for Internet subscriber services. Because Ethernet offers lower equipment cost and same-as or better-than reliability and performance, we expect growing investment in Carrier Ethernet. The 6K8 Switch supports this trend."

The Magnum 6K8 Switch is the newest and smallest part of a broad family line of configurable switches, and is available in a variety of DC and AC power models, including the dual source -48V DC power input that is used in most telecoms facilities. For fiber-to-the-premises, the Magnum

6K8 offers per-port configurability for RJ-45 connectors and 10 Mb fiber as well as the full range of 100 Mb fiber connectors: ST, SC, MTRJ, and LC. GarrettCom's 6K-series Managed Switches are available in confirgurations that support applications from the office to out-of-doors, and are NEBS and ETSI rated.

The Magnum 6K8 Switch is easy to install and operate. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) simplifies software set-up. Addresses of attached nodes are automatically learned and maintained, adapting the switching services to network changes and expansions and providing plug-and-play operation.

It comes with the company's Managed Networks Software (MNS-6K) that offers a complete range of management services to support telecommunications installations, including Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv1) monitoring, SNMPv3 manager access authentication and password encryption for mission-critical security, Telnet and TFTP remote management, port mirroring for network troubleshooting, port security for intruder protection, and SNTP network timekeeping. All Magnum 6K switches come with redundancy support including STP and RSTP, and GarrettCom's standards-based S-Ring? technology for high-speed fault detection and correction in an average of 0.25 second. The Magnum

6K8 Switch with MNS-6K is easily integrated into existing networks with standard LAN management features.
