I have a linksys wrt54g router (a) with the latest sveasoft firmware. I am thinking of buying one more wrt54g box (b) and set this up with WDS to expand the wlan. This will work fine, but I have a question about the physical network Ports on the wrt54g (b) who will extend the network. Will they work in WDS mode?

Interesting question. Natively the device segments its router and wirless functionality so if the firmware/software you leaves that segmentation in place then you should be good to go. Here is a link to an article that explains that segmentation:
