You can still follow a calls progression on modern digital switches but it just doesn't have the same feeling. I recall on the Prologix I managed that it was list trace station (stn) and you'd see off hook, digit dialing, trunk seizure, etc.
But flashing lights and hearing the noise of actual switching would have been more exciting.
Ah the old days in the middle of the night and hearing a call move through an old SXS switch, and sometimes if a relay is a little off you can hear the talking, I miss that, maybe we should go back!!
And, it should serve only the Old Telephone Switchman's Retirement Home. ;-)
I still have nightmares about being served by steppers with dial pulse orginination. ;-)
