The next federal COVID relief package, the HEROES Act, was passed in the US House of Representatives in May, but is now stuck in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stalled the bill because he opposes core provisions that would extend unemployment protections and aid for state and local governments, which is desperately needed by many workers who have been laid off or furloughed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead he wants to focus on protecting employers from being sued for putting workers and customers at risk.
