Holes from punch cards are chips. Holes from paper tape are chad.
Maybe it depended on time and place. In 1965, when I was introduced to the college computer center, I was told that the glass candy jar full of punch card residue that sat on top of the school's IBM 1620 console contained "chad".
They didn't use paper tape.
