More efficient use of the limited spectrum. The cell carriers can pack
3 digital calls in the same bandwidth used by 1 analog call. This is a real issue in cities and urban areas. Wouldn't be a problem in the country if the carriers would fill out the holes, but whether they do that or not is yet to be seen.
