And that strictly depends on where you happen to live. New England Telephone in Rhode Island was always profitable and because of that it was one of Ma Bell's darlings.

We got ESS before Boston did. But we still had some assinine toll boundaries in the state. Those have pretty much been demolished but there are still some artifacts left.
