Suppose some molester uses your identity in a chat to arrange an

For that particular example, the cops will probably show up at the arranged meeting and arrest whoever shows up.
For other examples of identity theft (hackers obtaining credit in your name), the innocent party may have a little more trouble getting clear of the mess.
