Police hunting for thieves who steal uptown Verizon customers' identities then use them to order pricey iPhones
Cops say at least 15 apartment residents ... have been victimized by the scam since November.

Identity-thieving crooks are ordering piles of iPhones from Verizon, using the Social Security numbers of unsuspecting Washington Heights and Inwood residents -- and baffled neighborhood cops don't even know how to begin dialing back the crime spree.

"They are able to circumvent Verizon's identification procedures," Inspector Barry Buzzetti, the commanding officer the 34th Precinct, warned residents at a recent meeting. "There is a substantial rise in identity-theft cases."
