FCC wants cell phone towers to have backup power [telecom]

The Phila Inqr reported that the FCC wants wireless carriers to provide 8 hours of battery power backup at every cell tower. The carriers are resisting and appealing the order. (Except for Verizon, it has a history of installing backup generators and batteries to its cell sites, most famously during a 2003 blackout that kept much of the Northeast in the dark for hours, but not Verizon customers. )
