At&T Announces Thousands Of Layoffs, Firings Just In Time For Christmas [telecom]

By Carlos Ballesteros

AT&T plans to lay off and fire more than a thousand workers starting early next year, according to local reports.

Across the Midwest, an estimated 600 workers were notified they were being laid off by the company on December 16, a week before AT&T announced it was doling out $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 of its employees in celebration of the Republican Party's tax overhaul.

"How can you lay people off and then give them $1,000 and say that there's going to be more jobs available?" Joseph Bianco, president of Local 6360 CWA in Kansas City, told Fox 4 on Thursday.

That seems pretty easy to answer: AT&T is a big conglomerate with many different businesses and services. They were overweight in services that are in decline, like landlines that they're phasing out. Meanwhile, other services are growing.

It seems like Bianco is just playing to people's emotions, rather than thinking of it logically like a businessman.
