That ties into an interesting bit of history I just read. Back in the

1920s AT&T was thinking there was a market for pictures by wire, so they started working on fax equipment. One of the side topics was that they had an optical scanner that would punch a Teletype paper tape with characters space, period, T or M for four different levels of blackness. So when the tape was transmitted and run through a Teletype printer they got a typewriter-art picture of the picture they had scanned.
