I'd rather have my house completely burglarized than have my own or my family's fingers lopped off by some jerk wanting to get in.
It's not that difficult to lift a fingerprint good enough to fool those locks.

It's also been pointed out that a brick through the window provides easier access than hacking off digits.

Well, a recent episode of MythBusters managed to open a high end fingerprint lock with a photocopy of a thumbprint Adam stuck on his thumb and licked :-).
The manufacturer claimed the lock had never been defeated, but I guess that just means no one ever tried.
Yeah, but a lot of stupid criminals won't know that.
