Testing the firewall ruleset in my router

Hi,

I'm trying to make a network assessment of the DSL router I use in my home network, as a step to take before adding a new server inside the network securely.

I am trying to think of a way of doing this without relying in an external host, as I don't have regular access to any. I have found a lot of information on doing this with ipchains or iptables for Linux, but my router doesn't use any of these.

There must be a way to simulate acting from an external host while inside the LAN. Any help?

It would be useful to have a way to test new rules behaviour (like external access to a ftp server), any ideas on this?

Cheers!
