DoS/DDoS Security-opinions

I'm researching best practices in network security for denial of service type threats and want to interview (by phone) IT security practitioners in any industry (healthcare, finance, retail, govt, universities, etc.) with strong opinions on practices for protecting against DoS/DDoS-type network intrusions.

Main theme is to explore if this type of security is something that's best handled in-house or with commercial intrusion detection/prevention products or with a managed service - or maybe some combined approach. Not interested in vendor promotion - just practitioner experience - to hear just how big a risk management problem this is (or isn't).
