from my predecessor I got a Nokia IP350 box where IPSO 3.7 + FW-1 FP3 is installed. Now we want to access the box via a GUI under Solaris 8 and/or WindowsXP. Which piece of S/W do we need for this operation - is it called "Smart clients for Solaris (Windows)"? Cost free?

Correct, you need to install the NG Checkpoint Smart Clients. Normally on the Checkpoint CD, but if you don't have this then you will need to download it from Checkpoint, but to do this you need a support contract.
Depending what your trying to achieve also, you should be able to access the nokia via https(voyager), shh or console.
