What are logical lines on a Cisco router?

Hi Folks,

I am a newbie and was trying to grasp the purpose / significance of logical lines (eg. vty, con etc) that are assigned to various interfaces.

After searching on Cisco and googling the term, I have not been able to find a document that clarified the concept. I would greatly appreciate your time and effort if you could please help me understand the same.

Warm regards,

- PinkFloyd

line con 0 - Is the serial console port that you put the blue cable in. line vty 0 4 - Are 5 "ports" that you can telnet to. 5 is the default on many platforms but you can add more if you need to.

No idea if that helps?

Hmm are you implying that I should think of all lines as ports?

I don't know.

At least I now know the answer to this:- ">>No idea if that helps?" --- Apparently not.

"ports" was probably a bad idea. "Virtual terminal" is better but sounded too complex.

If you have a router set it up, do stuff and look at the relevant show commands

e.g.

sh line clear line

"telnet router" "telnet router" (again with the other one still open)#

connect to the console port and use Hyperterminal or whatever.

Good luck.
