OM3 patching on OM1 cable?

Can anyone tell me if there is practical adverse effects using OM3 fibre patch leads to connect equipment to OM1 cabling? At a very basic level I would think the receive leg would be degraded as you come from thick to thin. I do not have access to test gear to try it out at the moment.
