This link is to an ad by Theo. Vail, president of Bell Telephone, describing the achievements of the company in 1914. Vail was known for bringing substantial improvements to both the technical and business side of the company, and ending some of the cutthroat competitive practices of the early years.
It's a lot of text, but it illustrates the commitment to basic service they had in those days.
